Celebrating Emirati Women's Day 2024: A Tribute to the Women Shaping the UAE



Emirati Women’s Day, observed annually on August 28, is a day dedicated to honoring the incredible contributions of Emirati women in shaping the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This special day, founded in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, also known as the "Mother of the Nation," recognizes the dedication, strength, and accomplishments of Emirati women across various sectors.


The Legacy of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak


Her Highness Sheikha Fatima, a pioneer in advocating for women’s rights in the UAE, has played a significant role in advancing the status of women. As the wife of the UAE’s Founding Father and the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Sheikha Fatima has been a relentless advocate for female empowerment, education, and participation in public life. Her efforts led to the establishment of the General Women’s Union on August 28, 1975, marking the beginning of a journey towards gender equality in the UAE.


Achievements and Contributions of Emirati Women


Emirati Women’s Day not only celebrates the historical contributions of women but also highlights their modern-day achievements. Today, women in the UAE occupy 66% of government positions, with 30% in leadership roles. Additionally, over 20,000 female entrepreneurs drive innovation and economic growth, making up 10% of all Emirati business owners. The literacy rate among Emirati women has seen a remarkable increase, with 95% of female high school graduates pursuing higher education.
