Dubai, 4th July, 2024 (WAM) — In an exciting move to involve the community in the city’s urban development, the Dubai Road Naming Committee has launched the “Street Designation Proposal” platform. This innovative initiative, supervised by Dubai Municipality, invites the public to propose names for roads and streets across Dubai, fostering a deeper connection between residents and their city.

Preserving Legacy and Promoting Progress

The primary goal of this platform is to balance the preservation of Dubai’s rich heritage with its rapid modernization. By involving the community, the Committee aims to revive historical names and highlight cultural and social characteristics that reflect the emirate’s storied past, values, and vision for the future.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, emphasized the significance of community participation.

“The new platform serves as a digital system, allowing the public to suggest names for streets and roads across Dubai, keeping in mind a comprehensive method and specific criteria that reflect our identity and the interrelationship between the past, present, and future of Dubai,” Al Hajri said.

He also added:

“It aims to revive valuable historical meanings, heritage, and urban monuments, in line with Dubai’s leading global position and reputation.”

A Comprehensive and Inclusive Approach

The platform’s method for proposing names is both inclusive and thorough. It encompasses a wide array of classifications to inspire names for each area. These classifications include:

- Arabic and Islamic Design and Architecture: Emphasizing the rich cultural and architectural heritage.

- Art, Culture, and Arabic Poetic Prosody: Highlighting Dubai's deep cultural and artistic roots.

- Natural Phenomena and Local Flora and Fauna: Reflecting the natural beauty of the emirate with names of trees, plants, and birds.

- Environmental Sustainability: Promoting green initiatives and sustainable development.

- Historical and Archaeological Sites: Commemorating ancient landmarks and significant locations.

- Traditional Professions and Tools: Honoring the artisanal and industrial heritage of the region.

The diversity in these classifications ensures that the names not only preserve the past but also resonate with the contemporary and future aspirations of Dubai.

Community Involvement and Pilot Success

The public’s role in this initiative is pivotal. By visiting the platform https://roadsnaming.ae, residents can contribute their suggestions, ensuring that the names chosen reflect a collective identity and shared values. This initiative exemplifies the emirate’s commitment to community engagement and participatory governance.

The Committee has already completed a successful trial phase in the Al-Khawaneej 2 area, naming roads after local trees and plants such as Ghaf, Sidr, Reehan, Faghi, Samer, and Shareesh. This pilot phase not only tested the platform’s effectiveness but also showcased the rich natural heritage of the region.

The launch of the ‘Street Designation Proposal’ platform is a remarkable step towards integrating Dubai’s past with its present and future. By allowing the community to play an active role in naming the roads and streets, the initiative not only preserves the emirate’s heritage but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride among its residents.

As Dubai continues to grow and evolve, this platform ensures that its streets will tell the story of its rich history, vibrant culture, and dynamic future. Join us in this exciting journey by submitting your proposals and being a part of Dubai’s ongoing legacy.
