Omani Documentary “Sand Girl” Wins Big at the Roshani International Film Festival in India
Omani cinema has made another significant mark on the international stage with the documentary Sand Girl, directed by Salah al Hadhrami. The ten-minute film recently clinched two prestigious awards—Best Actress and Best Screenplay - at the Roshani International Film Festival in India.
Sand Girl captures the essence of Omani and Arab hospitality through the story of a woman living in the Sharqiyah Sands. Despite her modest lifestyle, she warmly welcomes and honors her guests, illustrating the deep-rooted tradition of hospitality, which transcends nationality.
The film's accolades at the Roshani International Film Festival are part of a growing list of recognitions this year. It has already won Best Direction at the Oman Desert International Film Festival, the Jury Award at the 11th Muscat International Film Festival, and Best Documentary Film at the Digital Gate International Film Festival in Algeria.
Hadhrami expressed the importance of such festivals, noting their role in fostering the exchange of cinematic experiences and encouraging filmmakers to refine their craft. He emphasized that the success of Sand Girl highlights the strides Omani cinema is making on the global stage, showcasing the dedication of Omani filmmakers to celebrate and promote their rich cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, Sand Girl is set to participate in the Lebanese Independent Film Festival and the Atlas International Film Festival in Morocco, further expanding its reach and contributing to the global recognition of Omani cinema.
